GBV refers to harmful acts directed at an individual based on their gender. It is rooted in gender inequality, the abuse of power and harmful norms. Gender-based violence (GBV) is a serious violation of human rights and a life-threatening health and protection issue. It is estimated that one in three women will experience sexual or physical violence in their lifetime. During displacement and times of crisis, the threat of GBV significantly increases for women and girls.
Gender-based violence/GBV/ is one of the most prevalent human rights violations in the world. It knows no social, economic or national boundaries. Worldwide, an estimated one in three women will experience physical or sexual abuse in her lifetime.

Gender-based violence undermines the health, dignity, security and autonomy of its victims, yet it remains shrouded in a culture of silence. ASDEPO, as a local NGO working to respond to and reduce gender-based violence, supports programmes in three region and in over 18 woredas of different region.
As GBV services are severely lacking in humanitarian responses. ASDEPO and other frontline agencies provide lifesaving services to support survivors of GBV, including services through women friendly spaces, case management and referrals, psychosocial support, and staff capacity building on GBV and awareness raising on GBV/child protection to access services without fear of violence or intimidation.

Regions including Tigray and Afar are experiencing extremely high rates of sexual violence of women and girls, especially as they have flee conflict zones and arrive into IDP camps or host communities. ASDEPO’s GBV project aims to contribute to a substantial reduction of GBV and child protection issues, and is focused in the area of hard to reach areas/district of Afar, Tigary and Borena.
ASDEPO is committed to extending its child protection and GBV programming across the region, with upcoming different protection projects. ASDEPO will continue to focus on strengthening child and women friendly spaces, case management and referrals, psychosocial support, and staff capacity building on GBV and awareness raising on GBV/child protection with its staff, partners and local community stakeholders.

Gender-based violence can include sexual, physical, mental and economic harm inflicted in public or in private. It also includes threats of violence, coercion and manipulation. This can take many forms such as intimate partner violence, sexual violence, child marriage, female genital mutilation and so-called ‘honour crimes’.
The consequences of gender-based violence are devastating and can have life-long repercussions for survivors. It can even lead to death.
In Ethiopia, half of all women have experienced physical or sexual violence at least once in their lifetime.
Despite laws which outlaw it, rates of gender-based violence in Ethiopia remain high. In many areas, traditional cultural values around the treatment of women are deeply entrenched and many people ignore or are simply unaware of new laws.
